How to Choose the Perfect Foundation Shade and Texture

How to choose the perfect foundation shade and texture to match your skin type. Find out what type of makeup base to pick to get a perfect matte or sheer finish.

It's even better to have more than one shade of foundation - your skin shade's changes every season even if you can't notice.

Don't do your makeup in artificial light, especially neon. It will make you look more pale and you'll be tempted to use more foundation. If you look in the mirror and actually see the foundation, it means it's too much.

Try to apply it in thin layers - pick up small amounts at once, blend well, wait some seconds to "dry" and if you need more coverage, repeat applying same thin layer.

What type of foundation suits my skin
There are many foundations with different textures for specific finishes: liquid, cream sticks, powder, mousse or spray.

Liquid foundations are sheer and great for most skin types, even out skin well and cover blemishes and scars. It's the best option for normal skin that doesn't have any particular problems.

Stick foundations provide a heavy coverage, great for blotchy skin and were made for women on the run who need a quick fix.

Cream foundations offer the best of both worlds to women with dry, flaky skin. Provide total coverage and contain rich moisturizers.

Use your fingers or makeup sponge applicator to apply carefully. It dries quickly, so try to apply it as fast as you can to avoid a patchy look. Don't forget to blend well any harsh lines.

Powders are used to control shine. They contain a certain amount of foundation and usually used during the day for touching up and refresh the coverage. Delivers a great matte, even finish. You'll find it lighter than the creams so it's perfect for women with normal to oily skin. But this foundation can show off your dry skin and blemishes.

Mousse foundation is a cream foundation in a whipped consistency. It gives a lighter coverage. A great option for older skin because mousse foundation doesn't settle in fine lines and wrinkles.

Spray on foundations are great for acne scars and post surgical skin to help the make up last longer.
